About PurpleButterflies.com

This site is a hodgepodge of various topics because I am a hodgepodge of ideas. I'm a former professional photographer and used to travel extensively and take a lot of nature photos, especially of Michigan UP. A few of my favorites are posted on the photos page.

Why Poison Ivy?

After a car accident in 2007, life took an odd twist and I became employed as an environmental educator at a camp. The kids were always having problems with poison ivy, so I made it my mission to educate them about what it was, how to identify it, and why they didn't need to be afraid of every plant that had 3 leaves. I became more or less of an expert on poison ivy and had a weird reputation because I kept a live plant or two in my office for show and tell. It might have been weird, but it worked as a good teaching tool.

After that position ended, I found myself in a regular day job. I miss teaching, but there are no opportunities for my odd specialty. So, I've taken it to the internet and hope my experience and knowledge of poison ivy will help people out. I guess everyone's gotta have at least one hobby, and this is mine!

What's in a name?

The name "purple butterflies" came from an event in my childhood. My mother tells me this story: I was at school in the second grade around Thanksgiving time. Everyone had gone out to play and I stayed inside. Even as a child, I preferred to be left alone. Apparently there was a Thanksgiving scene we'd worked on as a class and it was hanging on the wall. Everyone came back in from recess and I had drawn purple butterflies all over it. I reportedly told the teacher I just thought they belonged there (never mind that butterflies aren't around at that time of year, at least not in Ohio). I have no memory of this event, but my mom doesn't lie, so I believe it happened. And after all, purple was and is still my favorite color.

So, the name of the site honors my unusual vision of the world and the fact that even at my current age, I purposefully still don't do things like everyone else does.

"Hey! What happened to the photos of or the section on...."

I'm still working on transitioning the material from the original site, including the photos and cakes & cookie section. It's just too nice to be inside looking a computer right now. In the meantime, please contact me if you're looking for anything in particular.

Thanks for visiting the site and I hope you enjoy it!
